Web 101 - New
to the internet? We can help!
The internet is
a complex network system. Your computer uses your telephone line, DSL line, or other type of connection service to
log into the internet's network system. A connection service is necessary
to assist your computer in finding and logging on to this network through
your phone line.
Connection services
are offered by Internet Service Providers (ISP), and by portal companies
such as America Online, Prodigy, Compuserv and by dial up and hosting
companies such as Earthlink, Voyager, etc. They also may be offered
by your local telephone company.
Your connection
takes you to a vast network that ties these computers together.*
Your browser locates the website you are looking for, connects you to
the ISPs computer and returns information to you.
Once you are connected
to the internet's network, your computer uses a browser to translate
and view websites and pages. The most commonly used browsers are Internet
Explorer (IE) and Netscape and Firefox. These browsers take you directly to the
websites themselves.
*HOW
WE CONNECTc

Websites are actually
files that are stored on an Internet Service Providers computer and
available to the internet connection you have dialed into. They are
designed much like a book, with a cover page and inside pages. By typing
in the website address (http://www.websitename.com) you are requesting
the main page of that website to be sent to your computer. Additional
pages in that site are listed after "/" marks.
Once your browser
is open and connected, you will use the address bar at the top of the
browser to request particular websites, or you may use an internet search engine to find websites that contain content you are looking for.
Some of the most
popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, AOL Netfind and MSN. Use these search engines as you would use an index
in a library.
Each search engine
will give you a different selection of websites. Websites do not automatically show up on most search engines, and not all search engines are free. Search engines are products built and maintained by companies, so results you see are not random or necessarily accurate. At this time it is necessary to incorporate search engine marketing into your website maintenance program if you would like your site to appear on the search engines.
Once a website is developed,
the owner must submit to each search engine individually. Your website
will only show up in the search engines you have submitted. In the past these submissions have been free. Sirius
Company maintains a complete list of engines, charges and access addresses.
Please contact us for information or for assistance in submitting your
website to the search engines. (see our search engines section for more
information.)
Portal companies
such as America Online and Prodigy provide a built in browser
with your connection. The browsers built into these services take you directly
to the company's website and to their "members only" pages.
You may also use their browser to go outside the company's website "bubble"
to view the vast internet. Content on these companies websites may be
edited to meet their particular objectives and provide consistency.
